Website strategy 101: How to plan before you even think about design

Most businesses start their website project in the wrong place: they jump straight into picking colours, layouts, or even platforms.

The result? A beautiful website that doesn’t actually work.

The truth is: design should never come first. Strategy should.

A website is more than a digital brochure – t’s a business tool. Without a clear strategy, you’ll waste time, money, and opportunity.

Here’s how to plan your website (the right way) before you even think about design.

Step 1: Set clear goals

Your website isn’t there “just to exist.” It should earn its keep. Ask yourself:

  • Do you want more leads, more sales, or more bookings?
  • Should it educate, persuade, or convert?
  • Is your focus brand awareness or direct revenue?

Pro tip: Be specific. “Get more leads” is vague. “Generate 30% more qualified enquiries in the next 12 months” gives you a measurable target.

Step 2: Define your audience

Who is your site actually for? Spoiler: it’s not you.

  • Who are your ideal customers?
  • What problems are they trying to solve?
  • What objections or hesitations might they have?

A strategy-led website speaks directly to your audience’s challenges and needs. If you don’t know who you’re talking to, the design won’t matter.

Step 3: Map the customer journey

Great websites guide visitors from curiosity to conversion. That doesn’t happen by accident.

  • Entry points: How will people find you? (Google, social, ads, referrals)
  • First impression: What’s the immediate value they see on your homepage?
  • Next steps: Do they know exactly where to click next?
  • Conversion: What action do you want them to take — and is it obvious?

Think of it as a flowchart. Every page should move people forward.

Step 4: Plan your sitemap

Your sitemap is your site’s backbone. Without it, you’ll end up with a tangle of pages that confuses both users and Google.

At minimum, most businesses need:

  • Homepage
  • About
  • Services/Products
  • Blog or Resources
  • Contact

From there, add only what serves your goals. Keep it lean, structured, and easy to navigate.

Step 5: Get your messaging right

Even the slickest design will fail if your copy is unclear.

Your messaging should:

  • Tell people who you are and what you do within 5 seconds
  • Highlight the value you provide (not just features)
  • Handle common objections before they arise
  • Show credibility (testimonials, results, social proof)

Remember: design supports copy, not the other way round.

Step 6: Decide on functionality

Do you need:

  • A booking system?
  • A member area?
  • An e-commerce store?
  • Integrations with your CRM or email marketing?

Clarifying this early prevents expensive “bolt-ons” later.

Step 7: Future-proof your site

Your business will grow. Your website should too. That means:

  • Choosing the right platform (WordPress, Shopify, etc.)
  • Planning for SEO and performance from the start
  • Making content updates easy for your team
  • Allowing for new services, products, or locations

A strategy-led site scales with you, instead of holding you back.

Why strategy saves you money

Skipping strategy feels faster, but it almost always costs more. Without it, you’ll end up redesigning too soon, patching gaps, or fighting a site that doesn’t convert.

Investing in strategy upfront means your site launches with a clear purpose, speaks directly to your audience, and is built for growth.

Before you dive into colours, templates, or themes, pause and ask: “What’s the strategy?”

A successful website is not about pretty design – it’s about clarity, conversion, and results. And that starts long before design even begins.
