We know that investing in a website is a big decision for any business. Whether you’re launching a new brand or upgrading an outdated site, a well-designed website isn’t just a cost – it’s an investment that pays off in increased sales, better UX and long-term growth.
For many business owners, the question isn’t ‘Do I need a better website?’ but rather ‘How can I afford the website I want and need?’ And, while DIY platforms might seem like a budget-friendly option, they often lead to frustration, limitations and – ironically – higher costs later when things don’t work as planned.
The good news is there are funding options that could help you invest in a high-performing Shopify or WordPress website… you just need to know where to look.
While AB Web Designs don’t assist with funding applications, we do want to share some of the ways you can secure support for your business website:
1. Grants
Free money for a website? Yes, it exists! Grants can be a fantastic way to cover the cost of a professional website build, but they do require research, applications and funding isn’t guaranteed. Many local councils, business support organisations and industry bodies offer grants to help businesses improve their online presence.
Where to look for grants:
- Local Business Support Grants – Some councils offer digital grants to help businesses improve their websites. Check your business support hub* or government initiatives which can change all the time.
- Ecommerce & Digital Growth Funds – Some initiatives specifically fund businesses looking to upgrade their Shopify or WordPress sites.
- Industry-Specific Grants – If you’re in fashion, homeware or design, check organisations like the British Fashion Council, Innovate UK or The King’s Trust for potential funding.
Tip: Grant applications can take time, so if you’re exploring this route, start early and be prepared to explain how a website will help grow your business.
*This is an example from my local area in Kent but the same will most likely be available where you live too.
2. Website Payment Plans
If a large upfront payment isn’t an option, many businesses choose to spread the cost of their website build over time.
Flexible payment options to explore:
- Instalment plans – Many agencies (including us) allow you to split the cost into staged payments rather than paying upfront.
- Shopify Capital – Shopify offers revenue-based funding for businesses looking to invest in growth.
- WordPress-specific payment options – Some hosting providers bundle website development and ongoing maintenance into monthly plans.
Tip: If cash flow is tight, ask about what split payments or alternative financing are available with your developer.
3. Crowdfunding
For brands with a strong audience, crowdfunding can be a creative way to raise funds for a website update while engaging your customers.
Ways to fund your website through crowdfunding:
- Pre-sales & exclusive rewards – Platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo allow businesses to offer exclusive discounts, VIP access or product pre-orders in exchange for funding.
- Community crowdfunding – Some small business-focused crowdfunding sites, like Crowdfunder UK, support projects that enhance business growth.
Tip: Crowdfunding works best when you already have an engaged audience, so consider this if your brand has loyal customers or a strong social media following.
Can you claim website costs as a business expense?
Many businesses don’t realise that your website costs may be tax-deductible. If you’re investing in a new site or a major upgrade, it’s worth checking whether you can claim part of the cost as a business expense.
What to check with your accountant:
- Business expense deductions – Website development costs often qualify as an allowable business expense.
- R&D tax credits – If your site involves custom technology, software or innovative features, you may qualify for Research & Development tax relief.
- VAT reclaim – If you’re VAT-registered, you may be able to claim VAT back on website development costs.
Tip: Always speak with an accountant to ensure you’re claiming everything you’re entitled to.
DIY versus bespoke: the cost of cutting corners
One thing we hear a lot is: ‘I’ll just build my Shopify store or website myself, it’ll be cheaper.’ But what often happens is:
- Hidden costs: Cheap website builders come with limitations, meaning businesses end up paying for extra plugins, developers or redesigns down the line.
- Wasted time: DIY sites take hours (or weeks) to get right, pulling you away from growing your business.
- Poor performance: Slow sites, bad navigation and weak branding can actually drive customers away instead of attracting them.
A professionally built, optimised site is an investment that pays off; helping you sell more, build trust and grow your brand faster.
